  1. 1895-1979. Canadian Progressive Conservative
  2. politician, prime minister 1957-63, when he
  3. was defeated after criticism of the proposed
  4. manufacture of nuclear weapons in Canada. He
  5. was born in Ontario, and moved to
  6. Saskatchewan. A brilliant defence counsel, he
  7. became known as the `prairie lawyer'. He
  8. became leader of his party 1956 and prime
  9. minister 1957. In 1958 he achieved the
  10. greatest landslide in Canadian history. A
  11. `radical' Tory, he was also a strong
  12. supporter of Commonwealth unity. He resigned
  13. the party leadership in 1967, repudiating a
  14. `two nations' policy for Canada. He was known
  15. as `the Chief'.
